Join us in Gallery 1 at East Quay for Cathedrals in Sound, a relaxed, family-friendly classical performance with British-American violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen.
Set against the striking stained glass artwork of Pinkie Maclure — exploring connections between the sacred and the earthly, and the spiritual and natural worlds — this immersive performance brings together music and visual art in a unique setting.

Tamsin will perform a selection of classical works inspired by nature and the sacred, including Matteis’ Fantasia in A Minor, Bach’s Chaconne from Partita No. 2 in D Minor, Tartini’s Sonata in G minor (“Devil’s Trill”), and Biber’s Violin Sonata No. 16 (“Guardian Angel”).
This 45-minute performance is designed to be welcoming and accessible for families, offering a chance to experience the beauty of classical music in a relaxed environment.
This free event is presented by East Quay’s charity, Contains Art CIO, with spaces funded by Arts Council England.

About Tamsin Waley-Cohen
Tamsin Waley-Cohen is known for her deeply expressive performances across a wide-ranging repertoire spanning six centuries. With musical storytelling at the heart of her work, she has built a reputation for her “undeniably fabulous playing” (Classical Source) and poetic performances that connect directly with audiences.
She has performed with renowned orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Hallé, Liverpool Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony, Royal Northern Sinfonia and the BBC orchestras. She has also been associate artist with the Orchestra of the Swan and worked with conductors such as Andrew Litton, Vasily Petrenko, Ben Gernon, Ryan Bancroft and Tamás Vásáry.
A passionate advocate for new music, Tamsin has premiered works by composers including Oliver Knussen, Huw Watkins, Dobrinka Tabakova, Freya Waley-Cohen, Richard Causton, Joseph Phibbs, Richard Blackford and Deborah Pritchard. Upcoming highlights include premieres of new works by Erkki-Sven Tüür, Misha Mullov-Abbado and Gavin Higgins at festivals such as Aldeburgh, Lammermuir and Two Moors, as well as performances at Wigmore Hall. She will also celebrate 40 years of Kurtág’s Kafka Fragments with soprano Claire Booth and premiere a new concerto by Nick Martin with Manchester Camerata, inspired by sculptor Dame Barbara Hepworth.
Tamsin was the UK recipient of the ECHO Rising Stars Award, touring major concert halls across Europe, and has also performed internationally in Japan, China, New Zealand and North America. She was a founding member of the Albion String Quartet and has appeared at venues including Wigmore Hall, Aldeburgh Festival and the Concertgebouw.
She is Artistic Director of the Two Moors Festival and has previously led the music series at the Tricycle Theatre in London and the Bargello Festival in Florence. She studied at the Royal College of Music with teachers including Itzhak Rashkovsky, Ruggiero Ricci and András Keller.
