KITCHEN CONVERSATION: Jo Lathwood & Dr. Amy Burnett
DATE: Thursday 23rd October
TIME: 7pm - 9pm
LOCATION: East Quay Kitchen
COST: £12, including a drink upon arrival and light bites served by the East Quay Kitchen
Join us for a thoughtful evening of conversation and shared food, as artist Jo Lathwood discusses her solo exhibition Down the Hatch, on display at East Quay from 13 September 2025 to 4 January 2026.
Jo will be joined by Dr. Amy Burnett, a social historian, and George Harwood Smith, East Quay Curator, to talk about her artistic practice and the inspiration behind the exhibition – the often forgotten Ale Wives - the women who brewed and sold ale in the 17th century.
The discussion will be followed by light bites prepared by the East Quay Kitchen, with a glass of wine included upon arrival.
About Jo Lathwood
Jo Lathwood is a queer artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans drawing, sculpture, and large-scale installation. Her work often begins in response to aspecific site, material, process, or event, with context and sustainabilityplaying central roles in her approach. Lathwood works with recycled orrepurposed materials, guided by a personal sustainability manifesto shedeveloped five years ago. She advocates for a fundamental shift in howsculpture is conceived—moving away from permanence and possession, and towardborrowing, sharing, reusing, and using materials that can either biodegrade orserve a remedial function. Her philosophy prioritises what happens to anartwork at the end of its life, rather than its creation, embodying a "leaveno trace" ethos over the traditional ambition to "make a mark."
About Dr. Amy Burnett
Dr. Amy Burnett is a social historian of early modern (1550-1700) England. Her PhD, undertaken at the University of Bristol, uncovered the lives of 'alewives': non-elite women who sold ale in seventeenth century drinking houses. She frequently collaborates with Good Chemistry, a woman-led brewery, on various public talks, including the Think While You Drink series. Amy is currently putting together a special issue of an academic journal, which will focus on woman ale sellers across Europe. By day, she is a Policy Adviser at Historic England.
