MAY BANK HOLIDAY CELEBRATION

DATE: Monday 6 May
TIME: 15:00 - 19:00
LOCATION: East Quay Courtyard
This is a FREE event

Join us at East Quay to celebrate May Day and mark the start of Summer and welcome in the new season.

The event draws inspiration from our latest exhibition, "People Came for Tea and Stayed Forever" by Sam Francis, which showcases photographs from a May Day gathering at Nettlecombe in 1976, which includes the original May pole spinner featured in the exhibition. This event also commemorates the closing day of the exhibition.

We’ll be marking this old-time Beltane celebration with folk traditions historically celebrated at this time of year with a May Pole, dancing, flower-headdress making, music, and traditional folk songs to join in with. The festivities culminate in a ceremonial Summer Blessing where we crown this years’ May Queen (could this be you?!) in the courtyard and close with a performance by The West Somerset Brass Band at 6:30pm. All this washed down with Cider and delicious food from our BBQ.

3 – 5pm – Garland Making

4 – 4:30pm – Maypole Dancing

4 - 6pm - Flower Ribbon Wands family workshop

5pm – 5:30pm – Folk Songs

6pm – Spring Ceremony

6:30pm – Performance by the West Somerset Brass Band

Everyone is welcome!
