Facilities and Maintenance Technician


Location: Watchet, Somerset.
Salary: £11,200 to £12,000 for 16 hours per week to £16,800 to £18,000 for 24 hours per week (Full Time Equivalent £28,000 to £30,000). Dependent on experience.

We are looking for a practical, proactive, and community-minded Maintenance Technician to join our team at East Quay. You will play an important role in keeping our building and site running smoothly - from day-to-day maintenance and record keeping to supporting occasional larger projects across our community arts space.
This role is ideal for someone with a broad range of practical skills and a positive attitude. We appreciate that applicants may not have the full range of skills we are describing but should be able to demonstrate a range of skills and experience alongside a willingness to learn. For the right candidate there could be potential to grow the role supporting our wider aims for the organisation around regenerative practice.
You’ll work closely with the East Quay General Manager alongside a friendly and collaborative team including cafe and restaurant staff, the culture team, and studio tenants.
Key Responsibilities

- Carry out general building maintenance, including basic plumbing, carpentry, and electrical tasks (PAT testing training can be provided);
- Undertake a variety of planned and reactive maintenance tasks across all areas of the site;
- Complete preventative maintenance in line with agreed schedules and safety standards;
- Support facilities operations, including assembling furniture, maintaining outside areas, clearing waste, and keeping areas clean and tidy;
- Work independently or as part of a team to complete repairs and maintenance effectively;
- Conduct regular safety, fire, and COSHH checks to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations;
- Liaise with external suppliers and contractors for specialist repair or services, ensure all work meets safety and environmental standards;
- Inspect, maintain, and repair tools, equipment, and systems, and arrange external servicing as required;
- Organise the movement, storage, or disposal of furniture and equipment as needed;
- Act as a keyholder, contributing to the safety and security of the building;
- Communicate effectively with building users to minimise disruption during maintenance work;
- Support occasional technical or cultural projects as required by the wider East Quay team;
- Train and support the wider East Quay team in safe maintenance practices;
- Attend team meetings as required and contribute positively with the wider East Quay team;
- Promote and embed environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient working practices.
Person specification
Essential Experience and Qualifications:
- Broad practical experience across plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general maintenance tasks;
- Willingness to take on a wide range of tasks and responsibilities;
- Organised, with a strong ability to manage workloads, set priorities, and meet deadlines;
- Calm, adaptable, and reliable under pressure, with a relaxed approach to working hours (some evening and weekend work may be required);
- Friendly, approachable and aligned with East Quay’s values;
- Understanding of health and safety regulations and safe working practices;
- Strong team ethic and collaborative approach;
- Commitment to equality and diversity;
- Commitment to environmental responsibility;
- Pre-employment Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check required.
- Ability to juggle multiple priorities and work to deadlines.
- Enthusiastic, motivated and keen to fit in with the ethos of East Quay.
Desirable:
- Qualification in electrical or mechanical systems (or willingness to work towards one);
- Health and Safety qualification (e.g., IOSH or equivalent);
- First Aid at Work qualification (or willingness to obtain);
- Good literacy, numeracy, and IT skills;
- Experience with sustainable or energy-efficient building practices;
- Knowledge or concern around circular economics (reclaiming / reusing of materials etc);
- Experience of exhibition/theatre install and technical support.
- Gardening or grounds maintenance experience.
