Richard Broomhall, a well established video artist based at Spike Island showed his work in our shipping container gallery in 2017.

Richard’s installation transformed the gallery space into the inside of an undersea fibre-optic cable reaching out from the Severn across the Atlantic. Within the space, the artist presented a film created during his residency at the gallery. Combining drone footage and a specially commissioned animation sequence, viewers traversed the harbour walls and took a virtual plunge into the waters of the Bristol Channel.

This primarily digital work attracted unexpected interest from a younger, teen audience, often with their families—who enjoyed the unexpected immersive experience, feeding into our digital strategy development.
