The Studio

The Print Studio occupies a prominent ground-floor position at East Quay, opening directly onto the central public space beside East Quay Kitchen.

The studio sits at the heart of a vibrant cluster of creative and heritage organisations, artists and makers, centred around the East Quay gallery with its changing exhibitions and community events. Neighbours include Two Rivers Paper, producers of specialist handmade papers for artists, and a geology lab run by environmental consultancy Geckoella, celebrating West Somerset’s fossil-rich coastline. This unique setting gives the Print Studio a strong public profile and makes it an inspiring place to work.

The studio is fully equipped for intaglio, relief and silkscreen printmaking and occupies a total area of 57 sqm.

The main studio space

The main workspace houses two large presses and a silkscreen vacuum table, alongside drying racks, several metres of workbench, and dedicated storage. A purpose-built darkroom and wet room support screen exposure and cleaning.

Etching press and drying rack

The etching press is the AE4829 model from Art Equipment Ltd, with a plank size of 48 × 29 inches (1220 × 736 mm).

The adjustable top roller allows for both intaglio and relief printing.

While the studio does not provide acid etching facilities, artists are welcome to work with and print from their own pre-prepared and etched plates.

The relief press is a historic Albion, manufactured in 1836 and still in excellent working order.

The UV exposure unit and silkscreen vacuum table both accommodate screens up to 35 × 24 inches, allowing for A2+ size prints.
