Studio 4 - Jeffrey Hart

Hello, I’m Jeffrey Hart, a green woodworker, teacher, and lifelong lover of the woods. My work is rooted in a deep respect for the materials I use and the landscapes they come from. Every piece I make begins with a tree, often one I’ve known personally, and my craft is about continuing that tree’s story - transforming it into something that still carries its spirit and beauty.

I work with traditional hand tools and green woodworking techniques, shaping spoons, bowls, chairs, and other functional objects. I love the immediacy of working with green wood - the shifting grain beneath the knife, the scent of fresh timber, and the soft rhythm of each cut. Working quietly, without the noise of machines, allows me to hear the birdsong outside and to settle into a calm, focused state of mind. It’s a way of working that feels deeply honest, sustainable, and connected to the natural world.

My approach to making is slow and thoughtful. I’m not trying to chase perfection, but to reveal character - to let each piece of wood express what it wants to become. Craft, for me, is as much about process as it is about product. It’s a conversation with the material, and an ongoing practice of patience, attention, and care.

Alongside my own work, I set up and help run Nettlecombe Craft School - a place dedicated to keeping traditional crafts alive. We run courses in green woodworking, basketry, and other heritage skills, taught by expert makers from across the country. The school is about more than just learning techniques; it’s about building community, reconnecting people with nature, and celebrating the joy of making with your hands.

I also run The Earthen Floor Company, where I design and install natural clay floors for homes and public spaces. Much like my woodworking, this work is about reconnecting buildings to the earth - using sustainable, breathable materials that create calm, beautiful interiors. Whether it’s crafting a wooden bowl or laying an earthen floor, my goal is always the same: to make things that feel grounded, natural, and alive.

Through Jeffrey of the Woods, Nettlecombe Craft School, and The Earthen Floor Company, my hope is to help others discover the same sense of calm and connection that I find in the woods - to inspire a slower, more grounded way of living, one handmade object at a time.
